Closing the gap on Indigenous employment still has a far way to go, with Minderoo Foundation's Generation One calling for a national plan for Indigenous employment.
In February, the Federal government announced their commitment to a $424 million Closing the Gap Implementation Plan.
One of the plan's aims was to boost Indigenous representation in Australian public service, particularly in senior executive roles.
It's an issue many Indigenous Australians face, as one of the key findings from Minderoo Foundation's 2022 Woort Koorliny Australian Indigenous Employment Index was the lack of Indigenous Australians in senior management positions.
According to the Employment Index, First Nations people hold only 0.7 per cent of executive positions within the 31 employers which provided data.
Engineering provider Warrikal's executive officer, Wonnarua woman Amanda Healy said as an Indigenous business the commitment to employ other Indigenous Australians is tenfold.
"We are 100 per cent motivated to employ Indigenous people," she said.
"We maintain a 15 per cent engagement rate and we would like to do better but we are constantly competing with larger businesses with deeper pockets."
Minderoo Foundation Head of Indigenous Business Gumbaynggirr man Les Delaforce said Indigenous businesses need more support.
"We know Indigenous businesses are up to 100 times more likely to employ Indigenous Australians," he said.
"Backing these businesses will have untold benefits, both socially and economically, and promote a significant increase of First Nations people in meaningful work.
"It is critical governments and the broader business community focus on making this happen, one off measures just won't cut it anymore."
Healy said there is "without a doubt" a need to see more Indigenous Australians in leadership roles within the workforce.
"I think a different and diverse view helps make better, and more inclusive, decisions," she said.
"We would also see a bigger take up of Indigenous employees and businesses in their respective organisations."
Generation One is calling for a nation plan for Indigenous employment including more regular reporting on data.
The next time statistics on Indigenous employment will be compiled is the next census in 2025.
