Northern Territory-based women and children's shelter Dawn House has received an NT History Grant from Territories Families, Housing and Communities to record its history.

Specialising in family violence recovery, Dawn House has always been a service that is run by women for women and their children.

Throughout its history hundreds of women and children have been connected with Dawn House. Whether they are clients, Governing Board members, supporters or staff - this grant will allow Dawn House to record a detailed history and maintain accurate records of the women and children who have used, or delivered, its service for decades.

Dawn House Executive Officer Susan Crane said the organisation hopes that "many women will contact us with treasured memories and stories of new beginnings".

"We know that for some women who have accessed our services and have moved on with their lives, that they may not want to remember their time with Dawn House and that's understandable," she said.

"But we hope that many more will want to share their good memories, photos and mementos."

Last financial year 70 per cent of the women housed at the shelter were Indigenous, and 60 per cent of residents were children under the age of 12.

Dawn House also recently secured a grant which will allow them to rebuild the original buildings which have been in operation for close to 40 years.

"The biggest project we have coming up this year is rebuilding the shelter thanks to a new grant."

"We are currently in the planning stages," Ms Crane said.

Dawn House is encouraging any people who have accessed their services to get in touch and become a part of history that's changing domestic abuse victims lives, one by one.
