A bridge near the remote East Kimberley community of Warmun has been damaged following heavy rainfall linked to ex-Tropical Cyclone Hayley, with community leaders urging residents to stay clear while safety checks are completed.
A Warmun Community spokesperson said water levels were beginning to fall, but warned the bridge had been damaged and would remain closed while crews cleared debris and assessed its condition.
"We'll need some time to clear and inspect the bridge before we can open the gates," the spokesperson said.
"Please be patient and stay safe by keeping a distance from the fast-flowing water."
Cyclone Hayley crossed the Kimberley coast earlier this week near the Dampier Peninsula as a severe system before weakening and tracking inland as a tropical low.
While the cyclone did not directly hit the East Kimberley, its remnants brought widespread rain across inland parts of the region, increasing river levels and affecting road and bridge access.
The Kimberley regularly experiences infrastructure disruptions during the wet season, with communities often cut off for days or weeks when crossings are damaged or inundated.
Residents have been advised to follow local updates and avoid flooded crossings until inspections are complete and the bridge is declared safe.
