Maranunggu and Anmatjerre star Danielle Ponter aims for premiership glory at home

Danielle Ponter has already achieved plenty in her football career, but anyone who gets in the way of her winning a premiership with her beloved St Marys "better look out".

Ponter – a two-time premiership player for AFLW club Adelaide Crows – is currently playing for her home club the Saints in the NTFL Women's Premier League.

"It would mean the world to me," the Maranunggu and Anmatjerre star said of winning an NTFL premiership.

"I would honestly probably give up one of my AFLW premierships to win an NTFL premiership, just because of how special the club is to me and my family," she told SEN's Fridays in the Top End.

Ponter's father Shane is a six-time premiership player as a member of Saints' dominant sides of the 1990s.

The 23-year-old has played seven games this season for St Marys and has been in excellent form playing mainly up forward with stints through the midfield.

Her Saints have a do-or-die elimination final against the Darwin Buffettes this weekend.

"To be able to come back and be in a good position to win it, it's good to be a part of, so I'm just really keen and really wanting to win that flag," she said.

"I wasn't able to be a part of that success we had at the Saints and for some time we have really struggled in that area, so I'm just really hoping we can take it all the way.

"I'm slowly trying to readjust to playing in this heat, but I think I'm getting more comfortable with it now."

Ponter is regularly seen volunteering running water for Saints' junior teams and imparting her wisdom on the young footballers coming through the club.

The St Marys Football Club recently announced that the St Marys U16 Girls B&F award has recently been named the Danielle Ponter Trophy.

Ponter has played 45 games for the Adelaide Crows since joining the club in 2019.

She says that she received a contract offer to play for Essendon – the club at which her uncle Michael Long was a champion – but has no intentions on leaving the Crows.

"There was that initial offer, but I am really comfortable with where I am at with the Crows and the culture that we've have here," Ponter said.

"We'll see how that goes, obviously that's something I'll eventually look into, but for now I am really happy with where I am at."

Ponter said that being considered a role model for young Indigenous girls aspiring to play in the AFLW is one of her biggest motivating factors.

"There's not many Indigenous girls running around in the AFLW, so to be out there and hopefully seen as a role model to those types of girls is something that also really drives me.

"With the family as well and how successful they've been on the field, that's a massive thing for me, to be half as good a footy player as what my cousins and uncles were."
