A 34-year-old Indigenous man died in custody Alexander Maconochie Centre in the Australian Capital Territory on Thursday morning.

On Thursday evening ACT Policing confirmed they are investigating the death.

Police said staff at AMC found the man unresponsive in his cell around 7.50am on Thursday.

"Despite efforts by staff and emergency services, he was declared deceased a short time later," ACT Policing said.

"Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

"As the death is a death in custody, a hearing must be held at a future date."

More than 500 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died in custody since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody brought down its findings and made over 330 recommendations in 1991.
