Star all-rounder Ash Gardner is expected to be available to play in the historic day-night women's Ashes test at the MCG next week.

The Muruwari allrounder has missed the first two T20 games in the multi-format series with a calf strain and is doubtful for the final T20I in Adelaide on Saturday night.

Heather Graham has been added to that squad as cover as Australia also deals with the injury to skipper Alyssa Healy, which will prevent her keeping in the test.

"We're pleased with the form of the 13 players that have taken part in the series to date and feel it's a squad that offers a variety of options when it comes to selecting the makeup of the Test side," national selector Shawn Flegler said.

"Alyssa has been named in the squad as a batter only and we'll give her as much time as we can to prove her fitness ahead of the match. Ash will continue to be assessed daily… at this stage, she is on track to be available for the Test match.

"It's a reasonably experienced squad that has played Tests against India and South Africa in the last couple of years and one we think can beat England over the course of four days."

Despite her injury, Gardner is coming off her maiden ODI hundred in Hobart, as well as four wickets in the series and her role as the spinning all-rounder is crucial for the balance of Australia's side, albeit less so on the MCG wicket which is expected to have more grass on it to compensate for the pink ball.

She currently averages 31 with the bat and 21 with the ball across her six tests, with her last test match against England going down as one the all-time great Ashes performances.

In Nottingham in 2023, Gardener scored 40 in the first innings, and took four wickets in England's first knock, before doubling her efforts in the second as she bowled Australia to victory with the remarkable figures of 8/66—the second-best figures in women's test history.

The test victory proved crucial as England took out both the ODI and T20 legs of the series to draw the Ashes eight points apiece.

Australia have already won the current series, winning all five matches so far.

The final T20 is in Adelaide on Saturday night, with the day/night Test to start at the MCG next Thursday.
