There is still time to nominate an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person, group or organisation who deserves to be acknowledged for the hard work they have contributed to their local community.
The NAIDOC Perth awards for 2023 are right around the corner, with applications open until Monday 17 April.
Individuals or collectives based in Perth since January 1, 2021 can be nominated, with nominations accepted from an area as far south as Mandurah, north to Yanchep and east to Mundaring.
The only exception is the Nursing and Midwifery Award, with statewide nominees for the category being accepted.
There are 12 NAIDOC Perth award categories in 2023.
Youth of the Year - A prestigious award for individuals under the age of 25 years, who has contributed significantly to the development and empowerment of Perth's Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander youth and services over a two year period or more. The recipient will have demonstrated leadership and cultural integrity.
Outstanding Achievement Award - This Prestigious award is open to an individual who has contributed significantly to the development and empowerment of Perth's Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander communities over a five year period or more. The chosen recipient will have demonstrated exceptional leadership, vision, empowerment and cultural integrity on the individual and/or collective level.
Elder of the Year - One male and one female awards are to people who are considered to be an Elder within their family or community. Age restrictions have not been set for these Awards, but are open to any Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people who have an elder role. Elders who are positive role models who have contributed to their families and communities over a number of years will be looked upon favourably.
Education Achievement Award - Includes students at secondary (High School) and Tertiary (TAFE or University) institutions as well as those in Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs. The Award applies to students who are currently studying or who have completed their studies.
Community person of the Year - This Award is open to people who have made significant contributions to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in Perth. The recipient will have demonstrated leadership and cultural integrity in their services to the community.
Sportsperson of the Year - This Award is open to individuals who have or are currently excelling in a particular field of sport from a wide range of sports including all ball sports, water sports, athletics, dance, martial arts/combat and any other competitive sports as deemed suitable.
Carer of the Year - This Award is open to individuals who are carers in a paid or voluntary capacity. This includes caring for the elderly, unwell, disabled, their own or other people's children (for example - foster children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, siblings, children and young people in hostels or family group homes.)
Program of the Year - This Award is open to Not-for-profit organisations that deliver quality programs to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and is based in the Perth Metropolitan area.
Artist(s) of the Year - This Award is open to visual or performing Artists such as Painters, Designers, Photographers and Filmmakers, Sculptors, Dancers, Musicians, Signers, Actors ect. Open to individuals and groups.
Nursing and midwifery Award (state-wide) - Open to any practising Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander Nursing or Midwifery employee from across Western Australia. This award recognises the commitment of an individual who provides care within health. The award acknowledges their excellence in delivering safe, quality care to the community.
Business of the Year - This award is open to successful businesses that are at least 50% Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander owned and basked in the Perth Metropolitan area. Examples include (but not limited to) Indigenous Printing, clothing/attire, Trade, Tourism, science and Technology, ect.
Empowerment Award - Specifically selected from all applications by The NAIDOC Perth Committee and Judging Panel with a focus on empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth in the Perth Metropolitan community.
Finalists will be invited to the NAIDOC Perth Awards Dinner on Saturday, 13th May, 2023 at Crown, Burswood, with winners being announced on the same night.
