Gold Coast Titans half Jayden Campbell is approaching his new role full of confidence heading into the club's season-opener against the Bulldogs.
For the first time, Campbell, 25, is starting at no.7 in a new-look halves pairing as Gold Coast look to reverse their nasty start to 2024; winless in their opening six games.
Campbell, who began his career at fullback before more recently firming a place at five-eighth, is joined by AJ Brimson in the no.6, with veteran Keiran Foran set to sit out the start of the season with a bicep injury.
"It's a bit of a new role for me this year… so this pre-season, I've just really worked hard at doing that," Campbell said.
"I'm really lucky I've got great coaching staff and I've got one of the most experienced halves in Kieran Foran as a teammate and I'm feeling really confident going into this year."
He later added "I just know what type of player I am. I've done a lot of hard work over the pre-season and hopefully during the year, it'll pan out," amid outside talk around the new halves duo.
Campbell's not the first in his family to shift from further behind the line to a first receiver role.
His dad, Preston did the same in the early 2000s at the Sharks on his way to the Dally M Medal.
"I was a baby when he won the Dally M, but I still watch a lot of his highlights from during that time," Campbell said.
"Just to see someone like my dad who, we sort of play the same, do so well in that position, it gives me a lot of confidence.
"One hundred percent I do (hold belief in the role); this is my first pre-season that I've got to train in either five-eighth or halfback and going into the year. I'm just feeling really good.
"I've done a lot of work on my defence and managing games, so hopefully, that shows on the field."
Titans coach Des Hasler is also behind the Campbell and Brimson pairing, meeting reporters' questions about his expectations with a direct: "Good. They're ready for it. They've worked pretty hard in the offseason".
"He's (Campbell) 25 years of age now, he's developed quite a lot," Hasler later added.
"I think he took a lot of confidence out of last year playing alongside (Foran) and I'm really looking forward to seeing that progress. I think he's really looking forward to stepping up."
The Titans have a later start to 2025 after a first round bye, keeping them away from travel headaches similar to those forced on the Broncos and Dolphins last weekend while tropical cyclone Alfred hit their home patch.
"No doubt it's been a tough couple of days for a lot of people…more than half of our facilities are on the water, so had to make other plans and escape to Sydney early," Hasler said of their preparations.
"All the families are safe and well…the inconvenience isn't going to be too much compared to nearly a quarter of a million other people."
