Fremantle champion Michael Walters has signed a two-year contract extension with the Dockers.

The 32-year-old mercurial small forward put pen to paper to sign a deal that will see him remain at the club until at least the end of the 2025 season.

Walters has had an exceptional career at the Dockers, beginning in 2009 after he was recruited with selection 53 in the 2008 draft.

He is a five-time Fremantle leading goal-kicker and has kicked 331 goals across a 211-game career.

The 2019 All-Australian told Fremantle's official website that he was 'thrilled' to sign on for a further two seasons.

"I'm very excited, very happy and it makes me a one-club player, which is good," he said.

"It's the club I always wanted to come to, the club that I've been at for my whole adulthood. It's good to be here for a further two years."

He joins fellow Dockers veteran Nat Fyfe in signing two-year extensions.

"We (Walters and Fyfe) have been here for a long time, we've seen a lot of players come and go through the team and the young group that are stepping up at the moment are playing some unreal footy.

"The young boys are always eager to learn, get better each and every day, which also keeps us motivated. The ultimate team success is something that we're chasing and something we want to get before we do retire."

Walters had a tumultuous first couple of seasons at the elite level and during the 2012 pre-season was banished to WAFL club Swan Districts after the Dockers determined he was not meeting the physical requirements for AFL football.

He transformed his football career on and off the field and later became a valued member of Fremantle's leadership group.

Walters had a career-best year in 2019 where he gathered 479 disposals, kicked 40 goals and was selected as a half forward in the All-Australian team.

In 2023, Walters has kicked 16 goals in nine games, including two four-goal performances against West Coast and Gold Coast.

The Dockers' Head of Player Personnel David Walls said that Walters' energy and enthusiasm is infectious for the young playing group.

"He brings real energy and passion to the group and he's a real leader in that regard, particularly with some of our guys who are a bit quieter, Sonny comes in with plenty of passion and just loves the club," Walls said.

"It's brilliant he's going to be a one club player and he can keep bringing that passion.

"I feel the club is heading in the right direction and he wants to be a part of it for as long as possible."
