Nicole Brown, a proud First Nations Australian woman with connections to Larrakia, Malak Malak and Yanyuwa nations, has been elected to Darwin Council.

Cr Brown, who also ran for mayor of the NT capital, was declared elected on Friday evening as results were finalised in the local government poll.

She was elected in the Lyons ward, alongside Mick Palmer and Sam Weston.

Cr Brown, who also has Chinese, Filipino, English, and American heritage, told National Indigenous Times before the election that she made the decision to run when she "realised I could no longer just advocate from the sidelines... I needed to be in the space where the decisions are made".

On Saturday, she said: "I am grateful to everyone who believed in me and supported me on this journey."

"Being elected as a councillor is a responsibility I hold with pride and humility," Cr Brown told National Indigenous Times.

"Darwin is my home, my heart and the place that grounds me. Serving our community here means everything to me.

"My family and my connection to Larrakia Country are at the heart of who I am. Every decision I make will be guided by that grounding and the responsibility to honour those who came before me."

Cr Brown said she hopes to be a role model for "the next generations of Larrakia leaders".

"I want them to see that their voices matter, their dreams are possible, and that they can stand strong in leadership while staying true to who they are," she said.

More coverage of the local elections to come.
