The late Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is posthumously leading the field of finalists at this year’s Indigenous music night of nights almost a year after his death.

A list of finalists in the 2018 National Indigenous Music Awards released on Monday has Dr Yunupingu at the front of the field with three nominations across the various categories — going toe-to-toe with rapper Danzal Baker, aka Baker Boy, who also has three nominations.

The music legend, who passed away in July last year, is nominated for best album of the year for his last work Djarimirri, or Child of the Rainbow, which was released after his death in April.

He is also up for Song of the Year for Djarimirri, and artist of the year.

Other finalists include Jessica Mauboy, Dan Sultan, Alice Skye, Kardajala Kirridarr and Emily Wurramara, who are each nominated for two awards, and Birdz, Kuren, Archie Roach, Electric Fields, A.B. Original, Isaiah, Black Rock Band, Ziggy Ramo and Busby Marou.

The NIMA, now in its 15th year, will be held at the Darwin Amphitheatre on August 11 with some of the biggest names in Indigenous music once again battling it out for coveted titles and also performing on stage in the annual, open-air concert.

Baker Boy and Busby Marou will be among those performing on the night.
