The family of Cyril Kalippa OAM has accepted an offer of a State funeral.
The service will be held at St Mary’s Star of the Sea Cathedral, corner of McLachlan and Smith Streets, Darwin, on Thursday June 23, at 10.00am.
Refreshments will be provided at St Mary’s Football Sporting and Social Club, Abala Road, Marrara from 12 noon to 1.30pm.
Relatives, friends, representatives of organisations and members of the public are welcome to attend.
Mr Kalippa was an outstanding Territorian who shaped the history of the Tiwi Islands and the Northern Territory.
Chief Minister Adam Giles offered his condolences to the Rioli family.
“My heartfelt sympathies go out to the entire Rioli family, as well as the Tiwi Islands community,” Mr Giles said.
“Cyril Kalippa was a champion to the Tiwi community.
“A State Funeral is a fitting way to remember a man who was a firm advocate for Aboriginal rights, economic development in the region, and Aboriginal people, not just in the Tiwi Islands but right around the Territory.”
Member for Arafura Francis Kurrupuwu has been liaising closely with the Rioli family.
“Cyril Kalippa was a highly respected senior leader within the community,” Mr Kurrupuwu said.
“He spent his life working hard for the Tiwi Island people; he pushed for economic development in a range of sectors within the Tiwi community and was the first Chairman when the Tiwi Land Council was formed.
“Cyril Kalippa is leaving a strong legacy and he will be sorely missed within our community.”
