   Jess Whaler

A proud Gamilaroi woman, Jess is a granddaughter of Lorna Sampson of Walhallow. Jess spent her childhood on Wonnarua and Awabakal country, before moving to Ngunnawal Country where she has spent her recent years.

Following a lengthy career in the Australian Public Service, Jess has recently joined the National Indigenous Times as a journalist. Jess is a big advocate of truth in Journalism and is particularly concerned about the flood of disinformation that surrounded the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jess brings a unique perspective to journalism, having worked closely with senior executives within high profile Federal Government organisations that include; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Department of Education, Prime Minister and Cabinet – Indigenous Social Policy, Department of Industry, Science and Innovation and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies.

Jess has held a strong presence within the Canberra and Sydney Drum n Bass/Hip Hop communities, dating back to her days managing her own events company. Jess has also worked in community radio, producing and hosting an Indigenous program called Sovereign and an electronic music program with 2XX FM Canberra.

Through her writings Jess aims to draw attention to injustice and strives to make an impact by reporting on news that matters to First Nations communities. A former elite level swimmer, Jess is mentioned in the Black Gold: The Aboriginal and Islander Sports Hall of Fame | AIATSIS, her athletic background provides an understanding of the mental and physical aptitude of high profile sport.

When she’s not writing, you can find her enjoying the outdoors, powerlifting or swimming in the ocean.
