Who are we?

The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia Limited (AHCSA) is the peak body representing Aboriginal community-controlled health in South Australia at state and national levels.

Our primary role is to be the ‘health voice’ for all Aboriginal people in South Australia. We achieve this by advocating for the community and supporting workers through our Member Services with appropriate Aboriginal health programs based on a holistic perspective of health.

Senior Project Officer (Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care Workforce)

The Senior Project Officer, Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and advocacy of a Scope of Practice and a Model of Care for the AMIC workforce in support of Member Services to improve health outcomes for their Aboriginal communities.

The position will work across Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), SA Health maternity services and other partners to strengthen health-system navigation, referral pathways, shared-care arrangements and culturally safe continuity of care for Aboriginal women, babies and families across antenatal, birthing and postnatal services.

The Senior Project Officer - AMIC coordinates key processes including facilitating stakeholder consultation, collecting and synthesising stakeholder input, and providing regular updates to involved parties. Additionally, the role involves coordinating project planning, monitoring, reporting and managing the budget in accordance with funding requirements.

The Senior Project Officer is accountable to and reports to the Medical Director. It works in close collaboration with staff across AHCSA and Member Services, and engages with external stakeholders as required.

The position operates with a level of autonomy in managing the AMIC workforce project, applying knowledge and skills and adhering to well-established policies, procedures, methods, and guidelines in its day-to-day work. The position uses initiative and professional judgment as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of the Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care (AMIC) Workforce Project, ensuring outcomes are achieved on time and within budget.

• Develop and implement workforce initiatives, including the AMIC Scope of Practice, Model of Care, referral pathways, and shared-care arrangements.

• Build and maintain strong partnerships with ACCHOs, SA Health, Aboriginal communities, and key stakeholders across South Australia.

• Advocate for culturally safe, Aboriginal-led models of care that strengthen continuity of care for Aboriginal women, babies and families.

• Facilitate stakeholder engagement, consultation, working groups, and statewide discussions to drive workforce development and system improvement.

• Monitor project performance, manage reporting requirements, and support evaluation, quality improvement, and policy development.

• Represent AHCSA in relevant state and national forums, committees, and networks relating to maternal and infant health and workforce development.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

• Experience in developing, implementing and contributing to clinical governance related documents such as Scope of Practice and Models of Care.

• Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams within the education or health sector and collaborating with professionals from various disciplines.

• Experience collaborating with Aboriginal communities on projects or programs, contributing to the design and implementation of initiatives.

• Experience in community engagement and development with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and organisations.

• Experience in project management, working across multiple internal and external stakeholders.

Desirable

• Experience working in the Aboriginal maternal and infant care field

• Experience in critically reviewing relevant research and evaluation studies, to implement findings for practical application in organisational strategies and programs.

• Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice

• Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Maternal and Infant Care Skill Set – Clinical or other relevant qualification with experience working in the field.

• Degree or Diploma in Public Health, Health Science, Primary Health Care or similar field.

Special Conditions

• Current National Police Certificate.

• WWCC

• Ability to travel throughout South Australia, including overnight travel.

• Out-of-hours work may occasionally be required.
