Senior Executive Service Band 3 – Multiple Roles – Deputy Secretary Capability Acquisition and Sustainment & Chief Finance Officer

Your Role 

Deputy Secretary Capability Acquisition and Sustainment

Operating in the new Defence Delivery Group, the Deputy Secretary Capability Acquisition and Sustainment is accountable for delivering a significant acquisition and sustainment program that supports the National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program. Reporting to the National Armaments Director, this role provides advice to Government on capability investments. You will be accountable for ensuring Defence capability is delivered on time, on budget and to schedule, at the pace, scale and effect required to meet Australia's strategic objectives.

In this role, you will lead an integrated workforce of Australian Public Service employees, Australian Defence Force members and industry partners. You must be experienced in leading the delivery of large and complex projects and programs, and making risk based, cost and scheduling decisions, in a commercial and/or government environment.   

A key priority is accelerating speed to capability while maintaining strong governance, performance and risk management across Defence’s acquisition and sustainment portfolio. In this key senior leadership role you will ensure continuity of major programs and projects, strengthening partnerships across Defence, government, industry and international stakeholders, and provide trusted advice, on capability investment, delivery and performance. On 1 July 2027, this role will become a key leadership position within the new Defence Delivery Agency.

The role is Canberra based and will require both domestic and international travel.

Chief Finance Officer

The CFO oversees the development of the budget for the Defence Portfolio, providing advice on the financial aspects of policy and strategic decisions made in relation to all departmental activities and the overall management of the Defence Budget.

As the Chief Finance Officer you will be expected to provide independent, accurate, timely advice to Government on financial management within Defence. You will also be the principal financial advisor to the Secretary, Chief of the Defence Force, Group Heads and Service Chiefs.

Ongoing connection across the Defence portfolio and with whole-of-Government peers is essential, as is engagement with industry partners with respect to Defence’s engagement of the external workforce.

The role is Canberra based and will require some travel.
