Scott Boland robbed of Shield heroics by rain on final day v NSW

Jarred Cross -

Scott Boland has torn through NSW's top order to propel Victoria within touching distance of a huge Sheffield Shield win at the SCG.

The Blues were saved by the weather after falling to 8/116 in their second innings - still trailing the Vics mammoth opening total by 86.

Rain delayed play on the final day of play from Monday afternoon.

Boland helped mop up NSW's tail with 3/47 in their first attempt at runs before Victoria posted 454-6d in return to set up a hefty victory.

The 34-year-old Gulidjan quick passed Paul Reiffel's record for Shield wickets by a Victorian in the process.

By stumps on Sunday, Boland caught opener Blake Nikitaras' pad-in-front from around the wicket (6 runs), and nicked-off no.3 Daniel Hughes for a first-ball duck with a yorker just wide of off stump.

NSW were 3/40 overnight after Matthew Gilkes miss-timed a backfoot drive to Peter Handscombe at second slip off Will Sutherland's bowling.

Boland got back to work early on Monday sending Blues captain Moises Henriques' off-stump cartwheeling (13), catching Ollie Davies' edge to the slip cordon (13) and directing remaining opener Sam Konstas back to the pavilion with a feather through to the keeper.

It left NSW praying for the rain at 6/70 while Boland already had five in his pocket.

He finished 5-41 with three maidens.

The match was declared a draw due with the delays by 6pm on Monday.

After moving to the top of his state's all-time Shield wicket-takers list in the first innings, Boland again moved past Reiffel on the overall first-class tally for a Victorian.

He's due to return to the Australian set up in the coming weeks ahead of a two-Test series in New Zealand.

Boland toured with the Test side across all five matches in the summer just gone without featuring.
