Scott Boland makes Sheffield Shield history as Victoria's best with ball

Jarred Cross -

Scott Boland made Sheffield Shield history on Friday with three wickets toward pinning NSW to a modest first innings total of 252.

With his first, the 34-year-old moved past Paul Reiffel as Victoria's all-time leading wicket taker in Sheffield Shield with 319 dismissals.

By the end of the innings, Boland led Reiffel - who played 35 Tests for Australia and has since moved into international umpiring duties, by 321-318 poles.

Two wickets in Victoria's second innings with the ball will see Boland eclipse the 1990s seamer for most First Class dismissals in the state's playing history.

Boland's Shield CV includes 90 matches, 2957 overs, a 24.83 average and economy of 2.69 with seven five-wicket hauls since his debut in 2011.

The Gulidjan man waited a decade before his Test debut, marking his name in the history books with figures of six for seven to dismantle England in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

This summer Boland travelled with the men's squad without breaking into the XI and will board the plane for Australia's two-Test series with New Zealand starting February 29.

His spot on the plane, and remaining Shield season, looked in doubt for a short time after pulling up sore on red-ball return for the Vics earlier this month.

He returned to contribute in the second innings of the tight win over South Australia.

Victoria began their first innings with the bat against NSW on Saturday morning, reaching 0-50 in their response at time of publishing.
