Mills heads to Florida after signing with Heat

Callan Morse -

Patty Mills' NBA career has been extended after the veteran point guard signed with the Miami Heat for the remainder of the 2023-24 NBA season, according to reports.

ESPN reported on Tuesday that the 15-year NBA veteran has signed with Miami on a free agent deal, giving the Heat both playoff experience and depth at the point guard position.

Miami currently sit in seventh (34-26) in the NBA's eastern conference, well within playoff contention.

Mills' signing comes just days after being waived by the Atlanta Hawks ahead of the league's buyout deadline, allowing him to sign elsewhere this season.

In 19 appearances for the Hawks, Mills 2.7 points, 1.1 rebounds and 10.6 minutes off the bench behind All Star guard Trey Young.

It is expected the Torres Strait Islander/Ynunga man will play a similar role supporting Miami's starting point guard, Kentucky product Tyler Herro, whilst adding perimeter shooting depth to the Heat's roster which includes the likes of superstars Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo and Kevin Love.

Mills, a career 39 per cent three-point shooter, is averaging 37.3 per cent from the floor and 38.2 per cent from three-point range this season.

Miami will be the fifth NBA franchise to have the services of Mills, who has gone on to notch 879 career games - including 107 starts - for the San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks after being drafted 55th overall by the Portland Trailblazers in 2009.

The Heat also signed shooting guard Delon Wright in the free agent buyout market.
