Young First Nations artists confront home town problems in debut track

Rhiannon Clarke -

Passionate and self-driven First Nations rap group, Lil Youngins, has released their debut single and music video: The Problem.

The Maningrida, Arnhem Land, youth first started creating music together at the Maningrida Dance.

The group prides themselves on writing politically charged raps, with their first single The Problem addressing the issue of youth crime in Maningrida.

The lyrics speak of the systemic struggles faced by the kids of Maningrida, while "services are around they / ain't helping the youth… the kids are not the problem / maybe the system is the problem".

In the face of the grim situation, Lil Youngins offer a voice of strength and aspiration: "tryna make changes / I'm headed for greatness".

The group described the song as "an opportunity to be a voice for the young people of Maningrida".

"It is for the kids and the community of Maningrida. It has made our families proud," Lil Youngins said in a joint statement.

The Problem was produced by Tim Wilson and features Tillo (aged 14) and DK (17) on lead vocals.

J-MILLA, who creatively mentored Lil Youngins through the process of developing and delivering the track, said "I'm really proud of Lil Youngins for the challenge they have taken on".

"And also for the community of Maningrida who supported this project," he said.

"This is a new experience in life for these boys and I feel nothing but privileged to be part of their journey and see exactly how far they go in their life."

The Problem will be available on all platforms Thursday March 16th.
