Mi’Kaisha Masella will be one of the star performers at this year’s Homeground festival at the Sydney Opera House.
The 15-year-old features in a line-up that also includes Arnhem Land’s East Journey, New Zealand’s Trinity Roots and Brisbane’s Dubmarine.
The festival will be held on October 8 and 9 and celebrate First Nations’ culture. There will also be an Indigenous arts market, Indigenous food and workshops.
A crowd favourite, the Dance Rites dance competition, will also be back.
Masella set her sights on a music career at the age of nine and since then has featured in the sound track for the Sapphire movie, was on Voice Kids and has been played on Triple J Unearthed.
She hopes to study music in the US after she’s finished school.
Masella, whose mother is a Dharaumbal Murri woman from Central Queensland and whose father is Tongan, says she’ll perform a 30-minute set at Homeground, including a mix of original and cover songs.
“I probably get at least one or two gigs a month which is pretty good for a 15-year-old,” she says.
She says Homeground is set to be her biggest audience yet.
