The National Indigenous Times is the nation’s leading journal covering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues in Australia.
It is the most widely read and circulated Indigenous specific publication in the country.
NIT has twice won a Walkley Award for Excellence in Indigenous Affairs reporting (a High Commendation in 2004, and the Walkley Award outright in 2005), along with a Human Rights Award in 2004.
NIT specialises in investigative journalism and coverage of mainstream and Indigenous politics. The newspaper is based in Canberra, with offices in Wanniassa and in the federal parliamentary press gallery (NIT is the only Indigenous-specific media outlet represented in any parliament anywhere in the Australia).
The NIT print edition first hit the streets on February 27, 2002.
The paper is staffed and owned by black and white Australians. It does not, and has never, received a single cent of government funding. It survives purely on advertising and subscription revenue.
NIT’s print edition is published once a fortnight, 25 times a year. Our web edition - NIT Online - is updated numerous times in the course of a day. That all adds up to tens of thousands of readers getting their Indigenous affairs news from NIT every single day.
We hope you enjoy the NIT Blog. We also hope you’ll consider subscribing to the print edition of NIT, available here.
