Why is everybody carrying on about the Racial Discrimination Act?Sure it might be Australia’s legislative commitment to the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. But, let’s face it, the do-gooders at the UN tend to get out of hand pretty easily. So let’s not start getting all squeamish about a few so-called ‘human rights violations’ here in Australia. If the great Joh Bjelke-Peterson was still around, he’d have been quick to offer a reassuring “Don’t you worry about that” to the nervous nellies.Just for the record ‘human rights violations’ are things committed in Asian and African countries where folks just don’t know how to behave. These people come in all kinds of funny colours and many of them are not even Christians. It’s true that the RDA has been temporarily sidelined in the NT by the intervention legislation, but there are good reasons for this. You can’t make an omelette without breaking a few lives. All they’ve done is to suspend the law which makes racial discrimination an offence. It’s no biggie. They’re only blackfellas for crissakes. There’s lots of important work to do here in the Territory. We can’t afford to have progress impeded by fanciful bleating about ‘human rights’ from poncy types in Melbourne and Sydney who know nothing of our Unique Territory Lifestyle™.Now that the great party of social justice has taken over the tiller at the federal level, their first legislative action will surely be the full restoration of the RDA.They’ll stare down the troglodytes in the Senate - and beat recalcitrants about the chops with the Government Mandate.Won’t they?
